Wie met genoegen breit denkt er bijna niet over na, maar deze ambachtelijke handelingen kennen een lange geschiedenis met vele up en downs. Status en aanzien werd bepaald door factoren die geen fluit te maken hadden met de techniek en de resultaten. Het is dan ook geweldig dat het MOMU met deze tentoonstelling ingaat op deze facetten. Een geweldige tentoonstelling waar iedere liefhebber van textiel en mode plezier aan kan beleven. Wie oppervlakkig kijkt, ziet bijzondere oude en nieuwe breisels uit diverse perioden van de afgelopen eeuwen. Prachtige antieke stukken, topstukken van bekende modeontwerpers, typerende stukken in de stijlen van de vorige eeuw, voorbeelden uit diverse landen en grappig breiwerk uit stromingen als de punk. Wie zich verdiept en de rode draad oppikt, ziet al snel lijn in de prachtig geëtaleerde voorwerpen. Ze vertellen steek voor steek het verhaal van het breien door de eeuwen heen, waarbij men altijd wel een mening had over dit ambacht en wat er uit voort vloeide. Anno 2011 schudt het breien het imago van suf en 'typisch iets voor je oma' met kracht van zich af. Wie nu nog denkt dat breien alleen iets is voor ouderen, moet beter om zich heen kijken!
Toch.... ik heb al op heel wat rare plaatsen gebreid. In de trein, op verjaardagen van de familie en vrienden, op het Binnenhof in Den Haag, op de eerste rij bij een concert van Vicky Leandros. Maar nooit voelde ik mij meer bekeken dan toen ik de pennen oppakte op de vernissage van Unravel. Wat voor Hilly van der Sluis en mij de gewoonste zaak van de wereld is, leverde heel wat (leuke) opmerkingen gehad en verbaasde blikken op. We moeten beslist eens wat vaker bij jullie komen breien.....

Anyone who loves to knit hardly ever thinks about it, but these traditional movements have a long history with many ups and downs. Social status was determined by factors that had nothing to do with the technique and its results. So it is fantastic that MOMU pays attention to these aspects in this exhibition. This is a fabulous exhibition for all textile and fashion lovers. When looking superficially you will see very special old and new knitwear from several periods in the past centuries. Beautiful antique objects, famous fashion designer's showpieces, characteristic objects after the fashion styles of the last century, examples from several countries and funny knitwear dating back to for example the punk movement. Anyone who dives deeper into this subject and picks up the thread will soon see the connections in these beautifully displayed objects. Stitch by stitch they tell the story of knitting throughout the centuries and all the time people had an opinion about this craft and its results. In the year 2011 knitting is forcefully shaking off the image of being dull and something only grannies do. Anyone who thinks knitting is only for the elderly should start looking around!

Still…I have knit at many strange locations. In the train, at birthdays of family and friends, at the Binnenhof in The Hague, first row at a concert by Vicky Leandros, but I never felt more exposed than when I picked up my needles at the very busy opening reception of Unravel. What is daily routine for Hilly van der Sluis and me resulted in many (nice) comments, dozens of pictures, many surprised looks and a remark in the director of Woolmark's speech. We should definitely come to knit more often at our Belgian neighbours…..
